This course emphasizes reading, writing, research, and oral communication skills. The literature component focuses on nonfiction (Night), epic poetry (The Odyssey), drama (Romeo and Juliet), and the novel. Students will move beyond single paragraph essay to work on multi-paragraph essay format (including introductory and concluding paragraphs) and various grammar and usage skills. They will engage in focused research. Students will expand their vocabulary through the use of Barron’s 1100 Words You Need to Know. They will also explore fundamental theories and practices of public speaking.
