RE: Independent Study

I hope you had a wonderful, exciting (and restful) summer. Now that the semester is underway, I wanted to share with you a couple of thoughts regarding your independent study.

High Standards As an independent study student, you have an opportunity to delve deeply into a subject of interest to you. As a candidate you were carefully evaluated and screened; the teachers, administrators and I all have confidence in you and in your dedication to outstanding work. We all expect that you will uphold the high standards which our program has had for students, both academically and behaviorally.

Contract In the next few weeks you will be developing a contract with your teacher for this semester’s work. This will be developed jointly by you and your mentor-teacher; you do have input into the decisions made. If you wish, I would be glad to review your contract with you and act as a springboard for ideas. A copy of your contract will be turned in to me by the end of September. In addition, any time during the semester I would be more than happy to work with you and/or provide you with feedback or resources as you work on your project.

Project Summary In order to help the colleges better understand the work you have done in Independent Study, we ask you to write a brief summary of the work/project. This summary will be submitted along with your transcript to the colleges to which you apply and will be a way to distinguish yourself to those who review your application. As you work on your project, be thinking about your project summary. The summary is due to me by November 15 for all seniors and juniors doing a first semester project and by February 1 for any juniors doing second semester projects. If you plan to apply early decision or wish to submit an application sooner than these deadlines, please get your summary to me at least one week before you want you application to be sent out. Those of you who may be sending off an application to UW-Madison this fall need to get your summary to me ASAP, since those applications may be submitted beginning in mid-September. Colleges consider rigorous independent study to be indicative of a dedicated, enthusiastic, high caliber student; we wish your application to reflect appropriately the work you have done. Please see the assignment posted for the summary. In there, I have the title format and the introduction from me that should be copied into your essay at the beginning. I have also included suggestions for the content of your summary. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

I hope your semester is wonderful and fulfilling. Please feel free to stop by my office (200 wing) if you have any questions, concerns or just want to talk. Also, my phone number here is 238-5631, and my e-mail is See you soon! smile
